Mauritius ebony wood and boxwood mb-width 5173 This is a 1936 'Works'Illustrations accompanying a letter describing Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's microscopical observations, dated 12 January 1680. An English extract of the letter was printed in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 13 (1683), pp. 197 208. The figures show: fibres in a section of ebony cut crosswise (no. 6, fig. 1) and lengthwise (no. 6, figs. 2 and 3); fibres in a section of boxwood cut crosswise (no. 7, fig. 1) and lengthwise (no. 7, fig. 2); a
